DOH Oriental Mindoro Urges Residents to Practice Healthy Habits to Prevent Hypertension

The Department of Health (DOH) Oriental Mindoro is reminding residents to practice moderation and mindful eating, especially during the holiday season, as cases of hypertension remain a growing concern in the province.

Rising Cases of Hypertension

Recent data from DOH Oriental Mindoro revealed a significant number of cases in the second quarter of 2025:

  • 165 males and 267 females aged 20–59 years old were recorded as hypertensive.
  • Among seniors aged 60 and above, 141 males and 201 females were also reported with high blood pressure.

Hypertension, also known as high blood pressure, occurs when blood pressure in the arteries remains consistently elevated. Left untreated, it can lead to serious health complications such as heart disease, stroke, and kidney problems.

Lifestyle Adjustments During Holidays

Health officials cautioned that holiday gatherings often encourage overeating and excessive consumption of salty or fatty foods, which can increase blood pressure.

To reduce risks, the DOH recommends:

  • Limiting salt and alcohol intake
  • Avoiding overeating during celebrations
  • Engaging in regular physical activity
  • Managing stress effectively
  • Ensuring adequate sleep

DOH’s Call to Action

Provincial Health Officer Dr. Ramon C. Bombais emphasized the importance of preventive measures.

“Eating excessively and consuming unhealthy food, especially during Christmas festivities, can cause blood pressure to rise. We encourage everyone to be mindful and practice healthy living to avoid complications of hypertension,” Bombais stressed.

The DOH reiterated that simple lifestyle changes—such as eating balanced meals, staying active, and getting enough rest—can significantly lower the risk of hypertension and allow residents to enjoy the holidays without compromising their health.
