Big news for students! The Department of Transportation (DOTr) has officially rolled out an increased fare discount—from 20% to 50%—for all students riding LRT-1, LRT-2, and MRT-3, effective starting this Friday.
In a recent announcement on their official Facebook page, DOTr clarified that the 50% fare discount is not just for college students, but also for those currently enrolled in postgraduate programs. Even better—this discount applies every day, including weekends and holidays.
This move builds upon existing laws such as the Student Fare Discount Act, Expanded Senior Citizens Act, and the Magna Carta for Persons with Disability, which mandate a 20% fare reduction for eligible groups like students, senior citizens, and PWDs. The new policy effectively doubles the discount for students on major train lines in Metro Manila.
Here’s what students need to know to avail of the 50% fare discount:
– Must present a valid school ID or proof of enrollment for the current school year
– Open to all students, including those taking up graduate or postgraduate studies
– Discount applies to Single Journey Tickets only
– Not valid for Beep cards or Stored Value Tickets
– Tickets must be purchased at the station ticket counters—this discount cannot be redeemed via automated machines
DOTr encourages all eligible students to take advantage of this fare reduction, which aims to make daily commuting more affordable for the youth.
