Globe has emerged as the fastest growing 4G LTE network in the country, ending 2020 with the highest number of cell sites among telecommunications companies as the government eased up its permitting processes.
Latest data from the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) showed that as of end-December 2020, Globe had 10,395 cell sites compared to Smart’s 10,079 and DITO’s 2,360 towers.
Globe has been ramping up its cell site builds from 500 in 2018 that more than doubled to 1,100 in 2019 and further to 1,300 in 2020 despite the COVID-19 pandemic.
To fortify its leadership, Globe is doubling its efforts by building the most number of cell sites or towers in the company’s history after allocating a record P70 billion for its capital spending this year.
“Globe is seizing the opportunity to further accelerate its builds in 2021. The target is to put up 2,000 new sites, including in-building solutions and partnerships with independent tower companies,” said Ernest Cu, Globe President and CEO.
Around 90 percent of Globe’s cell towers are equipped with 4G LTE technology to ensure better data experience for users. 4G is a fourth generation wireless technology launched in the late 2000s that produces much faster speeds for better quality video and music streaming, gaming experience, and video conferencing, among other benefits. Globe is aiming to make 4G LTE the new standard of mobile data in the country.
As of January 2021, Globe has also deployed 5G sites in 1,069 areas in Metro Manila as well as Visayas and Mindanao to provide customers with #1stWorldNetwork experience.
The massive rollout program is in line with the growing demand for connectivity and bigger capacity amid the shift in consumer behavior due to the global health crisis.
