The Social Security System (SSS) South Luzon I Division recently marked Pensioners’ Day in San Pablo City as part of the agency’s 68th Anniversary celebration, putting the spotlight on the SSS Pension Reform Program and the recent increase in monthly pension benefits for senior citizens.

Recognizing the Contributions of Pensioners

During the event, SSS South Luzon I Vice President Engr. Edwin Igharas emphasized that Pensioners’ Day is an opportunity to recognize retirees for their contributions while also providing them with important updates on new reforms.

“This is our way of giving back to our pensioners who have been part of the system’s growth,” Igharas explained. “Through the SSS Pension Reform Program, beneficiaries can now enjoy a 10 percent pension increase for the next three years, provided by the government.”

He added that the reform seeks to balance adequacy and sustainability, ensuring retirees receive fair benefits while protecting the long-term viability of the Social Security Fund.

Pensioners Welcome the Increase

For many pensioners, the increase in benefits provides much-needed relief amid rising expenses.

Benita Jonos Catahan, a 64-year-old retiree from Nagcarlan, Laguna, shared how the reform directly impacts her daily life:

“We are grateful for the 10 percent increase in our pension because seniors like us already have maintenance medicines and other needs. This additional help eases the financial burden of our daily expenses.”

Services and Engagement Activities

Beyond the pension reform discussions, participants were treated to free health checks, financial literacy sessions, and open forums where they could directly raise concerns with SSS officials.

The annual Pensioners’ Day celebration, observed nationwide, underscores the government’s commitment to:

  • Recognize the contributions of retirees to nation-building
  • Provide timely updates on SSS reforms and programs
  • Strengthen engagement with the elderly community

Looking Ahead

The SSS Pension Reform Program continues to serve as a cornerstone of the agency’s efforts to ensure financial security for retirees while securing the sustainability of the pension system for future generations.

By actively engaging pensioners through events like these, the SSS reaffirms its mission to build a system that values, protects, and empowers Filipino workers—even beyond their years of active service.
