MegaWays slots are currently hugely popular in the online casino world. They won’t always be, so grab them while they are hot – so to speak. Slot features come and go. We’ve probably been playing a lot longer than you. Over the years, we’ve seen numerous features rise to the top, and others fall by the wayside. Allow us to walk you through five slot features that we (and most likely you) no longer care about.
Doller Ball Jackpot Prizes
We’re not sure what Playtech thought when they announced the Doller Ball feature. This essentially allowed slot players to bet an additional dollar to receive a series of numbers, like a lottery ticket. If their numbers were drawn, they’d win a progressive jackpot. The jackpots weren’t tied to any game, nor even part of basic gameplay. They were side bets. Given the disastrously low odds of success, we’re not sad to see Dollar Ball jackpot features extinct. They haven’t been around for a decade or so now, and we say good riddance.
Community Jackpots
Another type of jackpot that didn’t last was the community jackpot. This was the idea that if you were playing a jackpot slot when its top prize was won, you’d win a share of the spoils, even if it wasn’t you who’d won it. That was also extended to “recent” bettors. Playtech was behind this one, too, and while it can still be found in Everybody’s Jackpot, the concept never really took off.
Seven-Reel Slots
Do you remember seven-reel slots? These were advertised as a new, incredible feature for the slot world. They didn’t pan out that way. It didn’t take players long to realise that it was trickier to land top-paying wins with seven reels. When we wanted more paylines, slot developers just brought MegaWays games to the forefront. Since these use six reels and are immensely popular, the seven-reel slot died of death shortly afterwards. A few developers tinker with bringing this feature back, but they quickly give up on it.
Alternative Betting Strategies
ELK Studios may still be developing games that allow you to alter your betting strategy, but they are the only developer doing that. Even now, ELK is starting to cut this fanciful idea from its games. It was a nice idea, we’ll admit – but it didn’t catch on. With so many games out there, if we want to play a similarly themed game with a different volatility level, we can do that. We don’t need to adjust it ourselves.
Colossal Reels Have Had Their Day
We’d like to have added buy-a-bonus modes to this list of terrible slot features. However, some slot players are still pouring money down the drain using them, so that’ll have to wait until we revisit this topic in the future. As a result, we’re aiming our crosshairs at colossal reels.
WMS Gaming pioneered these, and to be fair, these slots did have their day for a while. However, the whole transferrable wild reel thing’s novelty fell out of fashion when other developers started incorporating them into basic five-reel slots. While we’ve kept cloning wilds, so to speak, the colossal reels they came on have been dropped.
