A Global Community

Space Apps is an international hackathon that occurs over 48 hours in cities around the world. Because of citizens like you, we continue to grow each year. If you haven’t already, join us to share ideas and engage with open data to address real-world problems, on Earth and in space. Work alone or with a team to solve challenges that could help change the world.

The World Needs Your Ideas

Part of the Open Government Partnership, Space Apps is an annual event that pulls citizens together regardless of their background or skill level. Don’t let the name fool you… it’s not just about apps! Tackle a challenge using robotics, data visualization, hardware, design and many other specialties! Inspire each other while you learn and create using stories, code, design and, most of all, YOUR ideas. Show us your problem-solving skills and share your talents with the world!

Come Join in this Collaborative, Problem-Solving, Open Innovation Competition!

Since its inception in 2012, NASA’s International Space Apps Challenge has become the world’s largest global hackathon! Thousands of citizens across the globe, just like you, have worked with NASA data and products to build innovative solutions to challenges we face on Earth and in space!

Last year, Space Apps 2016 presented participants with 26 challenges in the fields of Technology, Aeronautics, Space Station, Solar System, Earth, and Journey to Mars. Some of the most popular challenges included creating a crowdsourced platform to compare environmental changes with symptoms of respiratory disease, building an educational app to help young students locate the moon, or developing an app to support local drone operators. See the graphic at the bottom of this page for statistics from 2016.

This year, WE INVITE YOU to be a part of Space Apps on April 29th-30th, 2017! We are excited to welcome you to use NASA resources to address challenges that we face on our home planet, Earth!

Whether you are a newcomer, or a seasoned hackathon veteran; a beginner or an expert; a student, an entrepreneur, a technologist, a scientist, a designer, a storyteller, an artist, or an individual with your unique skills and ideas; EACH AND EVERY ONE OF YOU has the capacity to bring about paradigm-shifting innovations.

With opportunities to participate in person and virtually, YOU can join this unprecedented international collaboration between government agencies, organizations, and academic institutions, and leverage NASA data and products to design solutions to scientific and environmental challenges.
