BSP to Release ?10 Commemorative Coin for Philippines’ ASEAN 2026 Chairmanship

The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) has confirmed plans to issue a ₱10 commemorative coin in January 2026 in celebration of the Philippines’ upcoming chairmanship of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

According to the central bank, the commemorative coin will maintain the obverse design of the existing ₱10 coin under the New Generation Currency (NGC) coin series. This side will continue to feature Apolinario Mabini, the Filipino revolutionary leader and statesman, preserving the historical and cultural elements familiar to the public.

Modern Design with Digital Integration

What sets the commemorative coin apart is its enhanced reverse design, which highlights ASEAN 2026 branding along with a QR code. When scanned, the QR code directs users to the BSP website and provides a gateway to official online platforms related to the Philippines’ hosting of ASEAN activities in 2026.

The BSP explained that the inclusion of a QR code represents a deliberate effort to blend traditional currency design with modern digital technology. This feature allows the public to easily access verified information, announcements, and updates related to ASEAN 2026 using their mobile devices.

Symbol of Regional Cooperation

Beyond its functional value, the commemorative ₱10 coin serves as a symbol of regional unity and collaboration. The BSP emphasized that the design reflects ASEAN’s shared goals of cooperation, economic integration, and collective progress, while underscoring the Philippines’ role in shaping the future direction of the Southeast Asian region.

The release of the commemorative coin is part of the central bank’s broader initiative to use currency as a medium for national identity, education, and public engagement, especially during significant international milestones.

The BSP has not yet announced the total mintage or circulation details, but the coin is expected to enter regular circulation starting January 2026, making it accessible to both collectors and the general public.
