Portrait photography and videography are written into the DNA of the OPPO Reno Series. Since its inception in 2019, it has brought users the very best in camera features empowered by OPPO’s cutting-edge R&D in imaging technology. For instance, the latest OPPO Reno8 5G, retailing at PhP27,999, boasts its flagship-grade camera systems. This Portrait Expert bears the evolution of camera technologies engraved in the Reno Series’ DNA.

From the 10x hybrid optical zoom and the Full Dimension Fusion (FDF) portrait video technology to a suite of self-developed AI algorithms, the Reno Series continuously evolves mobile photography and videography to optimize the shooting experience and enable users to record every moment of their lives in vibrant detail. Today, the Reno Series is used by more than 50 million people in 60 countries and regions worldwide and is widely recognized by fans for its powerful imaging capabilities.

During the past, we’ve received constant positive feedback from Reno users that has further motivated us to continue developing our imaging technology to make each generation of Reno even better than the last and provide customers with the best photo and video experience possible. Through our analysis of this feedback and other user insights, we discovered that about 40% of photos shot on Reno smartphones are taken after 5 pm. For video, this percentage is even higher at nearly 50%. This discovery caused us to think about how we can better cater to user demand for fantastic image quality in darker nighttime environments. Based on this, we got to work upgrading the portrait features on the latest Reno8 Series to unleash unlimited imaging power that enables users to capture every memorable moment in life with incredible detail and clarity.

Unlocking Unlimited Imaging Power with Dual Sony Flagship Sensors

As most people know already, getting a decent shot in lowlight environments is easier said than done, especially if you are trying to capture a crisp, realistic-looking portrait. Some of the typical problems encountered in these situations include facial blur and image noise. Given that many of these issues are a direct result of the lack of light in the environment, one of the most effective ways to improve the image and video quality is to address the fundamental issue itself and devise a way to increase the light intake of the sensor.

To achieve this, there are two realistic options available: you can either increase the size of the sensor, or you can completely revolutionize the arrangement of pixels within the sensor. Both options have their drawbacks. Increasing the sensor size means sacrificing the compact size and weight of the phone. Changing the pixel arrangement, on the other hand, is time-consuming and requires a lot of investment. As the first option means sacrificing the user experience, we opted for the second option, which ultimately led to the creation of our RGBW sensor technology.

To avoid technical problems like signal crosstalk and chromatic aberrations, OPPO developed an innovative Quadra Binning Algorithm that adds two W (brightness) sub-pixels to each R, G, and B pixel. This makes each pixel capable of detecting and recognizing white and one of the red/green/blue signals. In good lighting conditions, every sub-pixel in the RGBW sensor is capable of capturing its own image information without influencing its neighbors. When the overall light is insufficient, the four sub-pixels combine into one, delivering enhanced light sensitivity that allows the sensor to “see in the dark.” Compared with a traditional RGGB Bayer filter array, the RGBW sensor can take in 60% more light and reduce image noise by 35%. This allows the phone to take brighter and clearer images while maintaining the correct color in lowlight environments.

Once the Quadra Binning Algorithm approach had been agreed upon, the next challenge was to figure out the most optimal way to run the algorithm. After weighing up all the factors, such as power consumption, compatibility, and overall performance, the OPPO R&D team decided that the best way to implement the algorithm would be on the image sensor itself. Following a close partnership with sensor manufacturer Sony to embed the Quadra Binning Algorithm on the sensor. This led to the launch of the Sony IMX709 RGBW sensor. Built using a 22nm process, the IMX709 delivers the best power-to-performance ratio of any flagship front camera image sensor on the market right now, and it is this IMX709 RGBW sensor that you will find powering some of the advanced imaging capabilities on the new OPPO Reno8 5G.

OPPO Reno8 5G also features a flagship Sony IMX766 50MP sensor on its main camera

OPPO Reno8 5G also features a flagship Sony IMX766 50MP sensor on its main camera. The IMX766 features a 1/1.56-inch sensor size and 1?m pixels, the latter of which can be doubled in size to 2?m using OPPO’s Quadra Binning algorithm, allowing enhanced light intake to deliver a clearer image.

OPPO has incorporated DOL-HDR technology into both the front IMX709 sensor and the rear IMX766 sensor

Besides issues related to lowlight, the backlight is another annoying problem that can make capturing the perfect shot more difficult than it ought to be. On smartphones with traditional camera sensors, it’s common to see strange ghosting effects on images taken in strong backlight. This is a result of the HDR process, which combines sequential images of different exposures into one single image with a greater dynamic range. As the content of the images change slightly between each exposure, not all objects in the frame align perfectly when the images are combined, giving rise to the ghosting effect.

To avoid this problem, OPPO has incorporated DOL-HDR technology into both the front IMX709 sensor and the rear IMX766 sensor. DOL-HDR differs from traditional HDR processes as it takes short and long exposure photos “quasi-simultaneously” before synthesizing them into a single frame image. This increases the dynamic range of the video by a factor of 4, providing the perfect balance between brightness and shadows and effectively addressing the ghosting problems caused by motion. Whether you’re posing in front of a sunset or beneath serene moonlight, every photo and video taken on Reno8 5G will look brighter and sharper.

Powerful portrait features to make every night your night

Night photography and videography are proving grounds for any smartphone camera. With flagship sensors on both the front and back of the phone and a suite of AI-based portrait features, the OPPO Reno8 Series gives users the power to capture stunning portrait videos in virtually any situation.

Ultra Night Video – Always Vivid, Always Clear

Picture a stunning city view at night. The rich and colorful neon signs in the background of the street sit in stark contrast to the dark foreground. A lesser phone might leave these foreground elements draped in shadow, but the Ultra Night Video algorithm on OPPO Reno8 5G automatically detects ambient light and increases image brightness, improves color expression, and sharpens facial features to bring out the beauty in everything.

Whether you’re shooting at night or in dimly-lit surroundings, this AI-enhanced feature is here to deliver clearer, brighter, and more vivid portrait videos on both front and rear cameras.

Ultra HDR Video – Unfazed by Backlight

Shooting portrait videos in scenes with bright backlight has always been a challenge for any camera. The vast difference in brightness between the lightest and darkest elements in the scene is often too much for camera sensors to handle. But with DOL-HDR on OPPO Reno8 5G, this is no longer an issue. When OPPO Reno8 5G detects a high dynamic range in the scene, it will automatically toggle Ultra HDR Video, bringing DOL-HDR into action to process each video frame with enhanced dynamic range and true-to-life colors that guarantee details in videos, which come out looking bright and clear in both bright and dark areas. It’s like having an expert painter in your pocket who continually improves their masterpiece by adding layer upon layer of detail.

Night Portrait – Pro-level Photos at Your Fingertips

The new OPPO Reno8 Series also gives you pro-level portrait effects to apply to your still images. Anyone who has spent much time shooting photos at night will know that you need more time to take a photo in a dark environment. To get the best images possible, you either need to reduce the shutter speed so that the camera can take in more light, or you need to allow time for the various image processing algorithms to do their work. This delay, between shooting and reviewing a shot, really takes away from the fun of mobile photography.

OPPO Reno8 5G helps solve this by introducing two new features that reduce the time needed to snap a night portrait by 39.7% compared with the Reno7 Series. The first of these is the significantly increased light sensitivity of the dual flagship camera sensors, and the second is the industry-leading Turbo RAW algorithm, which can reduce the noise of all three R/G/B channels using an AI neural network. Now, when you press the shutter, photos appear more quickly without long-waiting times, enabling you to capture sharp nighttime portraits exactly as you see them.
