Following the recent success of Filipino athletes in international competitions, Globe continues to elevate the country’s Esports scene by providing support to aspiring and professional gamers, organizing world-class events, and rolling out a faster, more reliable 5G network.
As an enabler of a seamless digital lifestyle, the company is committed to solidifying the country’s position among regional and global Esports giants.
Globe has a strong partnership with the Philippines’ leading Esports and gaming company -Mineski Philippines. The alliance focuses on Liyab Esports, a professional team composed of Filipino Esports athletes who compete in various regional and international tournaments.
Recently, the Liyab Team finished 3rd in the recent Summer Season of the Wild Rift SEA Icon Series. The League of Legends Liyab team, meanwhile, secured a playoff spot in the Pacific Championship Series.
Globe is also the co-presenter of the biggest multi-platform Esports league in the country, the Philippine Pro Gaming League or PPGL. The league hosts the official national tournaments for Valorant and League of Legends: Wild Rift 2021.
“Globe is all about connecting communities through our products and services. Through Esports, we can bring people together at a time when physical distancing is the norm. Importantly, we see the potential of Filipino Esports gamers and content creators and their ability to really excel and succeed in this field, not just regionally but globally. It is our mission to make this happen,” said Nikko Acosta, Globe Senior Vice President for Content.
During this pandemic, over 40 million Filipinos consumed gaming content. Esports has become a social lifeline for many Filipinos and enjoys a wide following among local gamers and fans.
Globe empowers future gaming champions and content creators through its partnership with Acadarena, the country’s leading campus Esports initiative.
The company runs a holistic program for university Esports organizations where students are given the opportunity to hone their skills in gaming and discover other aspects of the industry, such as casting and production.
It has also created the first Southeast Asia Esports merit scholarship program for students to develop a career from their passion for video games.
Globe also supports gaming content creators, namely Fofi, Nukella, and 2020 Super Gaming Fest Breakout Gaming Creator of the Year, Yvenne.
The rise in popularity of Esports in the country comes at a time when Globe is also rolling out 5G technology in more areas.
Globe is a pioneer in 5G technology in the Philippines. It offers fiber-fast speeds of up to 900mbps, which is up to 20x faster than LTE speeds.
To leverage the power of 5G technology, the company has inked a strategic partnership with Niantic, developers of the widely popular mobile game Pokemon Go. The aim is to build more AR (augmented reality) experiences and interactions powered by Globe’s 5G network.
Globe has also collaborated with League of Legends developer Riot Games to give
customers exclusive access to RiotGO gaming bundles, featuring Wild Rift in-game content that refreshes every month.
RiotGO and RiotGO+ are promos between Riot Games and Globe where users receive in-game content bundled with data allocation so they can experience leveled-up gaming in League of Legends: Wild Rift for as low as Php 35.
“We see Esports as another avenue wherein people from all walks of life and various age groups can come together and learn the values of sportsmanship, teamwork, and inclusivity. You don’t need to be a professional gamer or content developer to have a shared passion for Esports. Everyone is welcome,” Acosta added.
Globe strongly supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals particularly UN SDG No. 8, which promotes sustained, inclusive, and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment, and decent work for all; and UN SDG No. 9, which is centered on industry, innovation, and infrastructure.
